Tables and columns. A two-column resume looks elegant in a PDF. To most parsers, the text reads left-to-right across both columns, so your job titles smash into your dates of employment, and your company names blend into your skill list.

Text inside graphics or images. If you used a design tool to create a stylised header with your name and phone number as an image, the parser sees a picture. It cannot read it. Your contact details are invisible to the system.

Unusual section headers. ATS systems expect 'Work Experience,' 'Education,' 'Skills.' If your resume says 'Where I Have Made an Impact' or 'My Toolkit,' the parser may not classify that section correctly, and your best experience gets misread or dropped.

  1. Open your resume in Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
  2. Select all the text (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A).
  3. Copy it.
  4. Open a plain text editor, like Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac (set to plain text mode).
  5. Paste it.

Now read what you see.

Does your name appear at the top, clean and readable? Are your job titles and company names on their own lines, in the right order? Do your dates appear next to the correct roles? Are your bullet points legible, or have they turned into strange symbols?

If the plain text version is scrambled, incomplete, or hard to follow, an ATS parser will have the same experience. That is exactly what recruiters see when they pull your profile from the system.

Fix what is broken in the plain text version, and you fix what the parser sees.

What a Parser-Safe Resume Actually Looks Like

You do not need to submit a boring or ugly resume. You need to submit one that survives parsing without losing information.

Practical rules:

  • Use a single-column layout, or if you use two columns, keep it simple and test it with the plain text method above.
  • Put your name and contact details as regular typed text at the top of the document, not in a header or as an image.
  • Use standard section headings. 'Work Experience,' 'Education,' 'Skills,' 'Certifications.' Boring, but reliable.
  • Use simple bullet points (a standard round bullet or a dash).
  • Save and submit as a .docx file unless the posting specifically requests PDF. Word documents parse more reliably in most major ATS platforms.
  • Avoid text boxes. Anything inside a text box is often invisible to parsers.

Keywords matter. But they only matter if the system can actually find them in a readable, correctly structured document.
